Stem cell research vs. Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple Sclerosis- noun- A chronic, typically progressive disease involving damage to nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Symptoms might be numbness, impairment of speech and of muscular coordination, blurred vision, and severe fatigue.

People who have MS could have it in one of two ways, either Relapsing/Remitting Multiple Sclerosis (RRMS), or Progressive MS Stem cell research has been tested in some European countries and found successful. This includes taking stem cells (acquired from a fetus or bone marrow) and implanting them along the spinal chord to repair or replace the existing cells.

What you thought you knew about the facts or myths.

Myth; Some might think that stem cell research is know to cure over 70 different diseases.
Fact; Stem cell research, so far, can only be qualified as a therapy.
Myth;Stem cells come from amniotic fluid and umbilical cord blood instead of embryonic cells. (cells from the embryo/unborn fetus)
Fact; Amniotic fluid and umbilical cord blood contain adult stem cells. Those both have potential, but not embryonic stem cells.
Myth; Religions oppose it.
Fact; There are people against this research, some believe that stem cell research is "pro-life" and "immoral." But there are some religions such as, Judaism, Hinduism, Islam, Buddhism, and some branches of Christianity, that don't oppose it.
Myth; Stem cell research is "unregulated and unrestricted," letting this research go into a dangerous direction.
Fact; This research is regulated under federal law and National Academies and the International Society for Stem Cell Research. Stem cell research has strict rules and regulations to follow in order to stay safe and humane.
